“Drupal can do everything!” – does it sound familiar? Well – it was the first answer to each of my questions posed during my first encounter with it, on the part of the humble clientele. “But no one said it’s going to work the way expected!” – was the second. A helpful advice: Always ask! And yes –install Firebug. As a non-programmer from the joyful lands of the humanities I asked myself: What is it that makes Drupal unique - evolving as more and more popular cms? Running the risk to spoil the plot: Branding. Branding “out-of-the-box” experience and branding the neat and expanding Drupal community as collective identity. Put them together and voila – the collective identity “out-of-the-box” is here to stay. Question is – how to use it on the market? A quick look at current trends in branding “open source” comes first, then a recipe for building up and supporting collective identity on-line. These will help us navigate to the branded Drupal community as collective identity “out-of-the-box”. So, arriving at the bullets structure:

  • “Open source identity” and Drupal, or why the cathedral and the bazaar need to meet. Question posed?: Why on earth does everybody (else) think Drupal is more than modules and themes?
  • Good practices and bad examples of collective identity on-line. Some social networking tricks will be closely examined in order to provide hints on the mechanisms to build and sustain homogenous collective identity on-line.
  • Collective identity “out of the box” or what NGOs and educational institutions could learn from the sehr populär Drupal community.
